California / Vermont Proposition 65 and AB1953 Lead Laws

To:                  All Star Water Systems California and Vermont Customers,   Businesses, and Sales Agents

From:           Brett Edwards – Marketing Manager

Subject:       California proposition 65 and AB1953 lead law

Effective January 1, 2010, AB1953 went into law in the States of California and Vermont.  This new law defines ‘lead free’ to mean not more than a weighted average of 0.25% lead content in devices that are intended to dispense water for human consumption.  According to AB1953, no person shall introduce into commerce non lead free product intended to convey or dispense water for human consumption through drinking water or cooking.  This includes potable water well and centrifugal pumps intended to convey or dispense water for human consumption through drinking or cooking.  Pumps and other devices designed for purposes other than dispensing water for human consumption may not be affected by AB1953.  This standard does not distinguish between residential and commercial use.

STAR offers a wide variety of products for sale in potable and other water applications.  The vast majority of our products meet the AB1953 requirements having less than 0.25% lead content of all wetted surfaces.  In order to verify our products meet the new lead standards, Star Water Systems has partnered with CSA, which is an independent ANSI-approved, third-party testing organization, to document third party certification.

Products that do not meet the criteria as outlined by AB1953 by January 1, 2010, cannot be sold in the States of California and Vermont.  Click the link below to view a list of products that currently do not meet the requirement for potable water and are not to be sold in California or Vermont, effective immediately, intended to convey or dispense water for human consumption through drinking water or cooking. In most cases, we have low lead alternatives for these products.  Products that have a low lead substitute are indicated with an * (asterisk) beside the non compliant part number.
